Raffles Maldives Meradhoo
Unique amongst most Maldivian Luxury Resorts, Raffles Maldives lies a 55 minute domestic flight and 10 minute speedboat ride south of Male. Its remote location however is by far its strongest asset. While Gaafu Alifu atoll has a total of 290 Islands, only 20 are inhabited which includes both local islands and resorts. Unlike busier atolls in the north , its location is pristine, devoid of any light pollution, the stars are the brightest we have seen. With less speedboats, seaplanes and flights, noise pollution is none existent. For explorers, there are a myriad of personalised adventures waiting for you to enjoy, big game fishing, jet ski trips to underwater reefs and deserted sandbanks, dolphin trips and a plethora of dive sites – all of which promise the chance to explore them in privacy.
Split into two – an overwater villa complex lies only 2 minutes from the beach Island, transferring between the two is seamless at any time of day. Raffles Maldives also has not one but two pristine house reefs something they can proudly boast about given they are also exceptional.
Smaller than most luxury Maldivian Retreats, Raffles is select with only 38 Villas, 16 on the Overwater Island and 22 on the Beach Island. While the number of villas is small the size of each ones is vast with the entry level Beach Villa coming in at 220sqm in size right up to the Royal Residence at 1250sqm. Everyone has a private pool and everyone has a butler.
The small number of villas creates a more bespoke dining experience assuring almost always a table by the shore for breakfast or at the waters edge, service is attentive yet unobtrusive and delivered with a smile. Our favourite restaurant is Yuzu with its Japanese and Peruvian inspired Nikkei Cuisine, although no one can fault the choice of dining options at Thari or the mouth-watering fresh grilled seafood at The Firepit. For pre or post dinner drinks or a mid-day cocktail Yapa on the overwater Island or the famous Raffles “ Long Bar “ on the Beach Island has an enviable list of fine wines and cocktails to work through. ( Be sure to try the Pisco Sours at Yapa!) .
To add to this there is an overwater spa, dive centre, extensive water sports centre, fully equipped fitness centre, Yoga and Pilates decks, Personal Trainers, Meditation Classes and a beautiful Boutique for those that crave the need for some light shopping.
There are no gimmicks at Raffles, no underwater dining, no treetop spa, slides from your villa, observatories or goldfish bowls on the beach.
